A groundbreaking new initiative is set to rejuvenate the ancient city of Pompeii, renowned as one of the most significant cultural heritage sites in the world, into a hub of modern organic wine production. With the collaboration between the Tenute Capaldo Group and the archaeological park’s management, the initiative aims to roll out a six-hectare vineyard focusing entirely on organic viticulture, intertwining the ancient with the modern.
Crafting Wine in Ancient Surroundings
Under the stewardship of Feudi di San Gregorio, a prominent winery in the Tenute Capaldo Group, a complete winemaking production cycle will be established on-site at the archaeological park. For the past 40 years, Feudi di San Gregorio has been pioneering research on indigenous Campania grape varieties like the traditional Taurasi. In partnership with Professor Attilio Scienza of the University of Milan and the park’s archaeologists, they aim to produce wines that remain true to their historical roots yet appeal to contemporary palates.
Introducing Wine as a Cultural Experience
Not only will this venture produce quality wine, but it also intends to transform the winery into a focal point of the archaeological park's attractions. According to Antonio Capaldo, president of Feudi di San Gregorio, this initiative revitalizes Pompeii as a dynamic center for research, knowledge, and cultural exchange. Through sustainable practices, the project seeks to secure a lasting legacy for future generations and contribute to the local economy.
Building on a Legacy of Research
Since the 1990s, the archaeological park's applied research laboratory has investigated the historical and scientific aspects of Pompeian vineyards. Their studies delve deep into the viticultural methods used in ancient times, enriching the narrative of the ancient city's past. The modern vineyard is part of a broader archaeo-farming initiative, which includes optimized olive cultivation and comprehensive social farming schemes. This effort not only enhances the narrative of Pompeii but also supports community and cultural farming projects.
