Uncovering the Treasures of a 19th Century Shipwreck Full of Champagne

A remarkable discovery has been made in the Baltic Sea by the BalticTech Team, revealing a 19th-century shipwreck loaded with an exceptional cargo of Champagne, mineral water, and porcelain. This incredible find showcases extraordinary underwater treasures and offers a unique glimpse into history.

The Discovery

Polish divers from BalticTech Team made the discovery while scouting for new diving locations in the Baltic Sea. Noticing what seemed to be a small wreck on their sonar system, two divers, Marek Cacaj and Pawel Truszynski, ventured underwater to investigate. What they uncovered was a well-preserved 19th-century shipwreck loaded with crates of Champagne and mineral water.

Significant Historical Find

According to Tomasz Stachura, a veteran diver with 40 years of experience, it was the first time encountering a wreck with such a significant cargo. The cargo included around 100 bottles of Champagne and mineral water, marking it an unusual find in the Baltic Sea. The mineral water bottles were labeled ‘Selters,’ a prestigious German brand still operational today.

Context Behind the Cargo

The discovery not only piques interest due to its cargo but also raises questions about its origin and destination. Historical records indicate that mineral water was treated almost medicinally during the 19th century, suggesting these bottles may have been intended for elite consumption. Considering Russia's Tsar Nicholas I reportedly lost a vessel in the area around 1852, this wreck might add a fascinating footnote to historical maritime records.

Future Explorations

Given the wreck's historical significance, divers are keen on further detailed exploration. They are currently collaborating with the Maritime Archaeological Research Institute at Södertörn University in Sweden. Future insights and findings from this significant underwater discovery will be shared at the BalticTech 2024 Conference to be held in Poland.
